Time Trial Tunnel
Dead posh bike boutique, Vita Cycles, organised a time trial in the Birkenhead tunnel, under the title of '10 Minutes Of Hell'. Although they claimed it was the first ever TT through there, it wasn't, cos I remember riding in the Tunnel Of Doom TT a few years ago, but I have to say, computer chip timings, an empty tunnel and brilliant organisation did make this a way better event.
I know the whole thing divided opinions on the cost of entry, the high profile prizes which were obviously only ever going to the pros, pre race season etc etc. I was happy to support it and go and spectate. You can't please all the people all the time, we all love a moan. One of the things I liked the most was the fact that it wasn't a British Cycling event, in my experience, independent events do encourage cycling alot more than the British Cycling events.
My adequate cycling hero, Alan Shuttleworth was first to ride and did it on his racing trike. Alex Dowsett was last to ride and was literally at the other end of the cycling scale with his Sky Team Pro contract, hyper Pinarello bike and National Time Trial skinsuit. Alex completed the ride with a truly insane time of 8 minutes 28 seconds to claim a shit load of money and a crazy, smart, posh watch.
Do that computer search thing and have a blimp at Vita Cycle Irby for a list of times and more info.
